The monastic community had their annual retreat from August 17-21. The retreat master was Fr. Hugh Feiss, O.S.B., from Ascension Priory in Jerome, Idaho. Fr. Hugh resided at St. Anselm’s for a year in the mid-1960s while studying at Catholic University, and subsequently spent about five summers with us while doing further studies at CUA. He has published widely on Benedictine topics, both in books that he has written or edited, and in articles in the American Benedictine Review and other monastic journals. He is also the editor of his own monastery’s newsletter. His talks were based on some basic Christian and Benedictine topics, such as humility, thankfulness, and grace. Some of what he said was drawn from another of his academic specializations, the 12th-century authors from the Augustinian abbey of St. Victor in Paris.
