The Abbey was privileged to offer hospitality to three visitors who came for the 36th Annual Convention of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NAPM) from July 29th through August 2nd. Fr. Blaine Schultz, OSB, came from St. Benedict Abbey, Atchison, Kansas, Stephen Lee from Georgia, and his friend Colonius Rawlings, Jr., from Virginia. All three are involved in church music through instrumental accompaniment or choral participation and direction.
Stephen Lee has written a collection of African-American spirituals entitled: Stand by Me, A Celebration of African-American Song, published by the Oregon Catholic Press (OCP) in sheet music and on CDs. OCP will also publish later this year his new Mass setting named Mass of Freedom. One evening of the NAPM Convention Stephen was happy to share with some convention participants the music he wrote for a Compline service (night prayer). We thank them all for using their musical talents to promote good music that will enhance church services.
