September 24, 2011

On September 24, 2011 Dr. John L. Esposito, Professor of Religion and International Affairs and Professor of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, delivered the 38th annual Thomas Verner Moore lecture at the Catholic University of America. His topic was “Preachers of Hate and Their Impact on Muslim-Christian Relations”. He exposed the extent of hate language against Muslims and the Islamic religion, both vehement and subtle, by radio and TV show commentators, by politicians and by religious leaders and others in America and abroad, especially since 9/11/11. He compared this Islamophobic mentality with the history of the opposition to Catholic, Jews, and other faith groups and the ethnic immigrant groups integrating into the predominantly Protestant ethos of the United States in earlier times. He challenged those who have ears to hear to take part in insisting on a more rational public debate on the place and the rights of Muslims in the multi-religious and multi-cultural society we live in today.
