On the evening of Friday, October 16, Abbot James attended the annual benefit for the St. Luke Institute, held at the Columbia Country Club on Connective Avenue. The honoree was Sister Mary Bader, who for many years had been leading the St. Ann’s Center in Avondale, Maryland, just a short walk from the abbey. More recently she has been residing in St. Louis, Missouri and serving as one of the Councilors for her province. Her father, Michael Bader, had been for some years the head of our Abbey School’s Board of Advisors, before that became a board of trustees, and Sister Mary’s brother Brian is an alumnus of our school. In her speech after accepting the award, Sister Mary spoke of the importance of accompaniment for persons in need of some assistance and illustrated her meaning with an example of a young woman named Brenda who found at St. Ann’s the love and concern that she had never received anywhere else. The photo of Sister Mary and Abbot James was taken right after her speech to those who attended the benefit.
